Checkprint proud to support DMU Fox’s Lair®
For over 10 years, students have been braving the DMU Fox’s Lair® at De Montfort University, Leicester and local Hinckley-based Checkprint Limited has been lending a helping hand.
Brainchild of Edwina Goodwin, senior lecturer and programme leader for the Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation BA (Hons) Degree at DMU, the competition forms an innovative module that challenges students to pitch their business ideas to real-life entrepreneurs in the ‘Fox’s Lair®’. The initiative registered to De Montfort University involves approximately 80 groups (each with 4/5 members)of first years who have been through a selection process to earn their place in this competitive assessment
The Foxes, a panel of experts, company owners and entrepreneurs from all over the country give up their time to judge the various entries from the teams of first year business students.
The annual competition attracts groups of students from across several courses who work towards braving the Fox’s Lair and presenting their ideas, with the added benefit of a sizeable cash prize at the end.
Edwina admits that, “the Fox’s Lair® brings real business into the classroom. It gives students a chance to challenge their abilities to be creative and innovative in a team and develop good transferable life skills, receive feedback from real business people, and have fun! It develops students’ confidence that ultimately enhances employability.”
“It doesn’t date because every year there are new challenges, new business ideas and different guests on each panel, so it evolves with the times,” she added.
More than 35 company owners and entrepreneurs are now official “Foxes” and Checkprint is pleased to be numbered among those who have had a long association with the Fox’s Lair®. TALL Group Managing Director, Martin Ruda and Checkprint Director of Finance, Lee Howitt have both participated, with Lee being a ‘Fox’ for over 11 years.
“It has been a real pleasure being involved with the DMU Fox’s Lair® since its creation and I value being a panel member. It never ceases to amaze me the ingenuity and innovative ideas that the groups of students produce. You can tell those that have really thought about their ideas, have that drive and determination and will go on to be leaders in business.” Lee said.
In addition to being panel members, Checkprint also provide every winning team with a full day of mentoring at its Hinckley site to give the students an insight into the everyday workings of a successful local business. “We give the students a tour of our facility and introduce them to the various operational departments around the building. This gives both our staff and the students a chance to exchange ideas and gain a better understanding of our company.” Lee continued. “It certainly stimulates conversation and works at all levels across our site.”
As part of the TALL Group, a UK leader in the provision of security print & secure payment solutions, including both paper and electronic services, Checkprint has supplied one of the ‘key’ elements of the Fox’s Lair finals, the finalist’s presentation cheque which is donated by Champions (UK) PLC …Just one more item that helps maintain Checkprint’s involvement with the competition year-on-year.
